Sad news: actress Elisabeth Sladen, who played the part of Doctor Who companion Sarah Jane Smith, died on Apr. 19, 2011 of cancer at the age of 63.
Her character, Sarah Jane Smith, was a companion to the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) and has appeared in 2 spin-offs of Doctor Who, most recently The Sarah Jane Adventures. She has also guest-starred in the new Doctor Who series.
Sarah Jane is one of the first Doctor Who companions that I remember, and I think she was one of the best. I enjoyed seeing her again in the new series and in her own show. The popularity of the character is in no small way due to the talents of Elisabeth Sladen as an actress. She will be missed.

I was really shocked when I heard the news.
Thanks for posting. I hadn't heard until you did. She played a wonderful companion.
Hey, Nissa, I have an award for you over at my Fortnight of Mustard Blog. Come on over and get it. :)
I grew up watching Elisabeth play Sarah Jane and I'm really saddened that we've lost such a lovely lady.
R.I.P. Elisabeth.
