one child policy
while they are waiting
for the poison shot
chinese women sit together
and talk of small things
"there are beetles among my squash plants."
"i need new knitting patterns."

Many years ago I bought a knitting magazine which had as one of its featured articles two knitting patterns for children's sweaters taken from hand-knit children's sweaters in China. Before that I never thought of Chinese women as women who knit. And so that inspired the mention of knitting in this sijo.
I have just acquired a new book of sijo, Modern Korean Verse in Sijo Form, translator Jaihun Kim. The book was published in 1997. I had 2 sijo books before that one, but both are of classical, not modern, sijo. The new book is helping to deepen my understanding of the sijo form, and what can be done with it.
